Arsene Wenger saved the Gunners transfer window with the acquisition of Germany star Mesut Ozil. He doubled Arsenal's transfer record and became the most expensive German player ever when he jumped ship to the Emirates. But is £40m too much to pay?
When one searches the word transfer into Google, the search results are littered with Ozil's move, most of the sites raving about the 'bargain' buy. Whether or not it is a true bargain depends on which way you look at it. RVP and Fabregas combined or half of Gareth Bale?
£80m for boy from Wales? Compared to this Ozil's fee was a bargain but compared to RVP and Fabregas, it was a scam. Bale should've cost around £50m and both RVP and Fabaregas should have commanded fee's of around £35m.
But lets face it, the amount payed for all three of these players was criminal. RVP was the leading scorer in the EPL 11/12 and Fabregas consistently performed at the top level for 3 consecutive seasons. Both these world-beaters cost £24m.
As for Gareth Bale, the Welshman cost Madrid a whopping £80m. This evaluation was based upon one magnificent performance against Inter Milan in 2010 and his award winning season last term.
Ultimately, if these new, more sensible figures are taken into account, the price Arsene Wenger payed for the German international was fair, a tad less would have been perfect, but in today's world what is £5m? Pennies.

Mesut Ozil shirt number announced
Arsenal's record signing Mesut Ozil has been given the number 11 shirt after his deadline day move to the Gunners. His preferred number 8 is currently occupied by the injured Mikel Arteta.
Arsene Wenger's sweet talk managed to fend off PSG to land the German international after a bigger bid said to be worth 150,000 euros/week was submitted by the french champions. However, it is also said that Real and Arsenal had agreed a deal with each other, subject of Gareth Bale's move to the Madrid side.
Ozil was in Germany to film a commercial for the national team when the 40m bid from Arsenal was submitted to Real Madrid. The German national team doctor gave the player a medical to finalise his switch to the English Premier League.

How will the acquisition of Mesut Ozil impact Arsenal?
Breaking: Mesut Özil signs for Arsenal in a record-breaking deal with one hour left in the summer window. An official statement was released by both the player and Arsenal.com earlier today. The German international is said to have cost the Gunners anywhere between 40-50m pounds, smashing the club's transfer record, previously held by flop Andrei Arshavin.
Özil certainly adds depth to a threadbare Arsenal outfit, but depth in the right area? Arsenal require numbers in defence and at the pinnacle of attack, so why buy a player in the Gunners most crowded area of the pitch? Arsenal already have Santi Cazorla, a player perfectly engineered to play just behind the strikers, where Özil will likely end up. His transfer would mean Cazorla shifts to the left flank whilst two of Wilshere, Ramsey Arteta and Rosicky make up the midfield each week. This record deal seems wasteful and, although a world class player, a panic buy. You wonder whether Wenger had the money burning a hole in his pocket and used another German internationals, Lukas Podolski, injury as an excuse to splash the cash.
There is no doubt that Özil will improve the squad as a whole, but Santi Cazorla. The little Spaniard was by far Arsenal's best player last season and has also consistently performed in recent weeks, when predominantly playing down the middle. Whilst played a portion of last season on the left flank, he never possessed the same threat as he did down the middle, constantly drifting and cutting inside, leaving a gaping hole for the opposition full back to run rampant.
Ultimately, the acquisition of Mesut Özil will improve the team, adding creativity and counter attacking ability to help Arsenal place in the top four. But he comes at a cost, and not just 40m, a player of his quality will grant him access to any position he wants to play and thus, will halt the development of Cazorla, Wilshere and Ramsey.
