Fenerbahce vs Arsenal - Review

Arsenal put recent troubles behind them in a 3-0 drumming of Fenerbahce at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium. Arsenal now have one foot in the champions’ league group stages as the second leg at the Emirates is just a formality as the gunners have realistically won the tie.

Pre Match

Arsenals unbeaten champions’ league playoff record was looked under threat as the tie approached. The disastrous league opener against Aston Villa last weekend brought more injury trouble to an already depleted Arsenal squad. Luckily, most injury doubts for the crucial qualifier in Turkey managed recover to feature in the starting line-up, which contained 10 of the 11 squad members who started vs Aston Villa on the weekend.

Arsenal pressed for an opener for the first 45mins, but a series of saves and blocks from the Fenerbahce goalkeeper and defence respectively denied the Gunners an early lead. Fenerbahce came out all guns blazing after the break but couldn’t stop Arsenal taking the lead. Aaron Ramsey waited patiently on the edge of the box to play Theo Walcott in behind the defence. The ex-Southampton prodigy swept a low cross past the onrushing goalkeeper for Kieran Gibbs to convert at the far post. Aaron Ramsey caught the hosts on the counter as he fired a low shot from outside the box at the bottom corner for his first and Arsenal’s second. A great night’s work was capped off when Theo Walcott was bundled down in the area for Olivier Giroud to score his 2nd goal in as many matches as he sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot.

Man of the Match

Aaron Ramsey was named man of the match after claiming an assist and a goal.

The result adds confidence Arsene Wenger, whose side were tipped to lose the match by the bookies prior to kick off. While the current squad proved they are full of class and potential, the result will also reflect positively on the club, which will help to bring some new faces to the Emirates. Arsene Wenger is looking to strengthen his side before the summer window closes on Sept 2nd, with a bid already made for Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye and interest in Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. Either way you look at it, the Gunners will be leaving Turkey in a much better position than they arrived in.
